Everyone makes mistakes, especially when trying something new. But, when your small business is putting it's reputation and money on the line to try some digital marketing strategies, making certain mistakes can be costly.

Please continue to read on which digital marketing mistakes you must avoid if you want to enjoy online success.

1. Failing to set goals

There's a saying that goes "failure to plan is planning to fail" and it can be directly applicable to digital marketing. Failure to set goals is a strong indication that your campaigns will fail.

It's important to make your goals realistic. Remember to take notes of the types of goals and objective you want for you business. Setting the right expectations makes it easier for you to focus on your digital marketing strategy.

Some examples of general digital marketing goals:

  • Increasing web traffic

  • Growing an email list

  • Increasing your social media engagement

  • Have a consistent brand/message through out all online activities.

2. Lacking a website presence

Only 64% of small businesses have a website, despite the fact that 97% of people looks for products and services online. 3. Not using social media effectively

Simply posting on your social media accounts will not be enough to make your business successful. Create content that educates, informs, or entertains your audience. Don't just sell. Don't be scared to do something different then your competitors - you never know what the next "big thing" is.

To avoid wasting time you should focus on your target audience you're promoting to. Use only the social media platforms that are suitable for your business.

Make sure to engage with your followers by liking, commenting, sharing, etc their content. It shows them you value them, and with most social media platforms you need to give love to get love.

4. Lacking patience with your marketing strategies

Never be in a rush to get immediate results or sales. Most strategies come with growing pains. When you don't see immediate results, you may feel the need to give up or change your strategy.

This requires you to be consistent with your hard work and making smart non-impulsive decisions with your digital marketing strategies. Patience can give you an edge over your competitors.

If you feel after a month or so you are not getting the results you want or need it may be time to adjust your strategy. Being patient with your previous strategy will give you a better indication on what not to do if you are changing your strategy.
